Islamabad — Continuous rainfall in the region has pushed water levels in both Rawal and Khanpur dams close to their maximum storage capacity, prompting authorities to release excess water through spillways on Sunday afternoon.
Rawal Dam Near Capacity
At Rawal Dam, water levels climbed to 1,751 feet, triggering the decision to open its spillways at 1:30 PM. The Nilore Assistant Commissioner will supervise the controlled release, while rescue, security, and medical teams have been stationed nearby for rapid response in case of emergencies.
Local residents have been advised to avoid unnecessary movement around the dam and downstream areas, with the district administration stressing that safety arrangements are already in place.
Khanpur Dam Spillway Operation
The situation at Khanpur Dam on the Haro River is similar, where the water level has reached 1,980.80 feet. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) confirmed that spillway gates would also open at 1:30 PM, with discharges expected to continue for six hours to stabilize storage levels.
Communities in Hassan Abdal, Attock, and low-lying areas near the Haro River have been asked to remain alert. NDMA has urged strict compliance with safety advisories to minimize risks of flooding.
Authorities Urge Caution
Officials emphasized that both dam operations are routine measures during peak monsoon flows but warned that negligence from nearby residents could turn manageable situations into crises. Continuous monitoring is underway, with emergency protocols fully activated.
The public has been reminded that cooperation with authorities is critical to prevent damage to property and ensure no loss of life as rainfall persists in catchment areas.
