In a move aimed at curbing air pollution, the Punjab Environment Protection Agency (EPA) has begun strict enforcement against commercial vehicles operating without a valid VOX fitness certificate. The initiative follows earlier action against smaller vehicles that were running without the required green emission compliance stickers.
A dedicated EPA desk, now functioning at the Safe City Authority offices, has started issuing warning notices to violators. According to EPA Director General Imran Hamid Sheikh, heavy transport vehicles without proper certification are major contributors to poor air quality. He emphasized that the VOX fitness certificate is crucial for verifying both the overall roadworthiness of vehicles and compliance with engine emission standards.
Warning Notices and Compliance Period
Over the last ten days, the EPA reports that 391 warning slips have been issued through Safe City surveillance cameras. Vehicle owners have a seven-day window to comply. After this period, officials warn that non-compliant vehicles could face impoundment, substantial fines, and cancellation of their route permits.
This crackdown represents a broader effort by Punjab authorities to address rising pollution levels. By targeting commercial vehicles—often responsible for heavy emissions—the EPA hopes to create a more sustainable and cleaner urban environment.
