Flooding across Sialkot has forced the local administration to shut down 80 government-run schools until September 10, with officials citing safety concerns as floodwater continues to affect several campuses.
Deputy Commissioner Saba Asghar Ali confirmed that a number of schools remain partially submerged, making it unsafe for students and staff to return. The closures follow a directive from the Punjab School Education Department, which advised the district to suspend classes until the situation stabilizes.
Areas Most Affected
The decision impacts schools not just in Sialkot Tehsil, where many institutions will remain closed from September 8 to 10, but also in the adjoining regions of Daska, Pasrur, and Sambrial. In some areas, authorities noted that waterlogged buildings and damaged access roads pose additional risks.
Safety Takes Precedence
Officials stressed that protecting students is the administration’s primary concern. With floodwaters encroaching on school grounds, the structural safety of buildings is under question, making reopening too risky at this stage.
This temporary suspension highlights how seasonal flooding continues to disrupt education in flood-prone regions, often setting back learning for thousands of children.
