WhatsApp is testing a long-awaited feature that lets users share “moving” photos, bringing it in line with photo capabilities already popular on devices like Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel. The option has surfaced in the app’s latest Android beta update (version 2.25.22.29) for a limited pool of testers. Wider availability is expected in the coming weeks.
What’s Different About Motion Photos?
Unlike a standard still image, a motion photo contains a brief burst of video and audio from moments before and after the shot. This creates a short, context-rich clip rather than a frozen frame — perfect for preserving the atmosphere of a moment. Samsung labels the feature “Motion Photo,” while Pixel devices use names like “Top Shot” or simply “Motion Photos.”
How WhatsApp’s Version Works
In the beta, users can choose a motion photo from their gallery and send it as-is, keeping both movement and sound intact. Alternatively, the same editing screen lets them strip it down to a still image before sending. A small motion icon appears on sent thumbnails, so recipients can instantly tell it’s not just a regular picture.
Device Support and Limitations
The feature works only with motion photos taken on compatible Android devices. Pixel owners, for example, might need to turn off the 50MP high-resolution mode to enable Top Shot. Until now, sharing these images through WhatsApp meant converting them into videos or using third-party apps — an extra step this update removes.
Currently in Limited Testing
For now, the feature is restricted to select beta users. WhatsApp plans a gradual rollout, so more Android users should see the option appear in their chats over the coming weeks.
