Swift action by the Punjab government has averted what could have been large-scale destruction in Tehsil Ferozewala, Sheikhupura, where floodwaters threatened to inundate entire villages earlier this week.
Acting on urgent directives from Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, local authorities rushed to construct protective embankments along vulnerable points, successfully stopping floodwaters flowing in from across the border with India.
These defenses shielded several villages—including Awan Par and Sant Pura—along with farmland, livestock, and critical infrastructure. Local farmers say the embankments not only protected their homes but also saved this season’s crops, which would have been wiped out.
Residents have credited the provincial administration, particularly the Chief Minister, for responding quickly and preventing the kind of devastation seen in other flood-hit areas of the country in recent years.
While the immediate danger has passed, local officials say they are closely monitoring water levels and reinforcing embankments to ensure the safety of nearby settlements in the coming days.
