Islamabad Temporarily Closes Popular Hiking Trails Amid Heavy Rainfall Risks

Islamabad authorities have shut down several of the capital’s most frequented hiking routes after days of intense rainfall increased the danger of landslides and rockfalls in the Margalla Hills.

An official notification issued on September 1 confirmed that Trail 2, Trail 3, Trail 4, Trail 5, and the path behind Saidpur Village are closed until further notice. The decision aims to prevent accidents on steep and slippery terrain, which has become hazardous following persistent downpours.

Safety First as Landslide Threats Loom

The Deputy Commissioner’s office shared the closure notice on X (formerly Twitter), urging residents and tourists to avoid the trails for their own safety. Seasonal rains routinely lead to minor landslides in the Margallas, but authorities say the current weather has made conditions particularly unstable.

A Hit to Islamabad’s Outdoor Scene

The hiking trails are among the city’s most popular attractions, drawing large numbers of visitors each week. The sudden shutdown highlights the vulnerability of Islamabad’s recreational spots during the monsoon season, which often sees damage to infrastructure and road networks as well.

Officials have encouraged citizens to stay alert, follow weather updates, and wait for official announcements before heading back to the hills.
